STEAM LA is committed to delivering a community digital library and youth recreation center to South Central Los Angeles. The project offers a safe space for skill development in today’s ever-changing society by exploring science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics through an entrepreneurial lens. STEAM LA seeks to dismantle internalized glass-ceilings by bridging the community with digestible, cosmopolitan news and information; and, equip South Central Los Angeles youth with the necessary tools to overcome community issues such as generational poverty, gang violence, drug abuse, teenage pregnancy and more. Help STEAM LA demonstrate that its community is ready to provide support for its youth to achieve their full potential.
One of the most obvious ways that the wealth gap is exacerbated is through lack of access to resources. A digital library and STEAM youth recreation center will be the first of its kind in a community that has been historically overlooked, and whose students’ abilities have been consistently underestimated. These facilities will be the first of many steps towards leveling the playing field and ensuring that no student is left behind, especially those of different socioeconomic or racial backgrounds.
We try to recruit qualified people of color from underrepresented communities for internships to promote diversity in the workplace and increase retention. It's been difficult to get qualified candidates from those areas for various reasons. Having a S.T.E.A.M. program could definitely offset this by introducing computer science programs at an earlier age, which prepares them for college internships at major corporations like Google & FB (who recruit as early as sophomore year).
